Brazilian Race Walker Ciao Bonfim Triumphs with Gold at World Athletics Championships After Losing Wedding Ring During Race

Caio Bonfim Achieves Gold at World Athletics Championships

In a remarkable display of talent and resilience, Brazilian race walker Caio Bonfim accomplished a lifelong dream by winning gold in the men’s 20km race walk at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

A Victory with a Price

The victory, however, came at a personal cost.

At 34 years old, Bonfim crossed the finish line ahead of China’s Zhaozhao Wang and Spain’s Paul McGrath, who took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Yet, during the race, Bonfim experienced a moment of distress when he realized he had lost his wedding ring.

Composure Amidst Loss

“I lost my wedding ring in the third kilometer,” Bonfim shared, but displayed a reassuring attitude. “I believe my wife will be OK because I won today,” he added.

Past Achievements and Future Aspirations

Bonfim previously won silver in the 35km walk during the same championships and boasts two bronze medals from the 2017 and 2023 world championships in London and Budapest, respectively. He also claimed silver in the 20km walk at the Paris Olympics in 2024 and has accumulated three individual medals at the Pan American Games.

Reflecting on his journey, Bonfim said, “After taking silver in the 35km walk, my wife told me to believe I would win gold.” Despite uncertainty during the race, he successfully overtook his competitors in the final lap.

Resilience and Motivation

Bonfim emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating, “This is a world championships of resilience.” He noted that he had not finished his first championship in 2013, making this victory even more meaningful as it marks his fourth world championship medal.

A Personal Dedication

Now, as Bonfim prepares to return home without his wedding ring, he holds his gold medal close to his heart. “My children, especially my oldest son Miguel, were on my mind during the race. I want my success to compensate for my time away from them,” he remarked, marking his win as a dedication to his family and country.

Conclusion

Caio Bonfim’s journey to victory is a testament to dedication, resilience, and the support of family, inspiring many as he continues to represent Brazil on the world stage.
