Sunshine Coast Lightning’s New Chapter

Australia’s only regional club in the Super Netball league, the Sunshine Coast Lightning, is poised for a change in ownership after almost a decade under the co-founding guidance of the NRL’s Melbourne Storm.

From Partnership to Independence

Founded in 2016, the Lightning originated as a collaboration between the Melbourne Storm and the University of the Sunshine Coast, emerging alongside the Super Netball league. Since its inception, the club has achieved remarkable success, claiming back-to-back championships in 2017 and 2018 and reaching the finals in six out of nine seasons.

Transition of Ownership

Now, the Melbourne Storm and UniSC are stepping away from their partnership, as the Global Sports Fund Management Group prepares to take over as the new licence holder of the Lightning.

Focus on Rugby League

Justin Rodski, the chief executive of the Storm, expressed that this transition will allow the club to concentrate on its core mission in rugby league. “This move will allow us to focus on the next generation of male and female Storm stars,” he stated, acknowledging the loyalty and enthusiasm of Lightning fans.

“Our supporters have been on this incredible ride, from memorable back-to-back premierships to family days that inspire young talent,” added Mr. Rodski.

Commitment to Women’s Sport

Co-owners of Global Sports Fund Management Group, Justin Pascoe and Lee Hagipantelis, affirmed their commitment to continue building and supporting the Lightning. They will officially take over the licence on October 1.
