Australia News Live: AMA President Debunks Trump’s Paracetamol Claims; PM Honors Zomi Frankcom in UN Address

Danielle McMullen, president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), stated that there are no studies demonstrating a connection between paracetamol use during pregnancy and autism. Her comments followed assertions made by former U.S. President Donald Trump linking the painkiller to autism. McMullen emphasized that while some studies suggest an association between paracetamol use and autism, larger studies have found no such link. She clarified that “association doesn’t mean cause,” pointing out that various factors during pregnancy, including fever or genetic predispositions, could influence autism development.

McMullen reiterated that paracetamol is regarded as a safe option for treating pain and fever in pregnant women, as endorsed by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). She urged people to rely on advice from qualified medical professionals regarding health concerns. This discussion comes as the Australian government seeks urgent clarification on paracetamol safety in light of Trump’s comments, with Health Minister Mark Butler calling for a prompt review by the TGA to ensure clear guidance for pregnant women.
