Moldovan President Maia Sandu has raised concerns about her nation’s independence and European aspirations amid police arrests of 74 individuals accused of planning violent disturbances, allegedly with Russian backing. Days before critical parliamentary elections, authorities reported seizing weapons and explosives during nationwide raids, with some suspects reportedly trained in Serbia by Russian instructors.

In her address, President Sandu accused the Kremlin of attempting to destabilize Moldova by investing heavily to incite fear and misinformation. She emphasized the country’s resilience, stating, “Our home is not for sale.” Pro-Russian parties have countered by alleging Sandu is attempting to intimidate voters.

As the elections approach, Sandu is urging high voter turnout, particularly among expatriates, to safeguard the pro-European stance of her governing Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which faces challenges from pro-Russian factions. Moldova’s strategic pivot towards the EU, reinforced by a recent referendum to enshrine this aspiration, reflects a broader reluctance to concede influence to Moscow, especially following Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
