ICE Agent Who Shot Man During Traffic Stop Reports Injuries Were ‘Minor’
Police body camera footage released on Tuesday reveals an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who fatally shot Mexican immigrant Silverio Villegas González describing his injuries as “nothing major.” This contrasts with the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) previous claims that the agent sustained “serious injuries” during the incident in Franklin Park, a suburb of Chicago.
The incident occurred when ICE agents attempted to arrest Villegas González, who allegedly attempted to evade them by driving his car towards them, allegedly dragging one officer along. Shortly after the shooting, which put local schools on lockdown, ICE agents described the events to responding Franklin Park police, asserting that they felt their lives were endangered.
Villegas González, a 38-year-old father from Michoacan, Mexico, did not have legal permission to reside in the U.S. and had a history of reckless driving. Following his death, community advocates and local officials, including Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, have called for a thorough investigation into the shooting.
As tensions rise over federal immigration operations in Chicago, which have seen over 550 arrests, the situation draws comparisons to similar actions during the Trump administration. DHS has not identified the involved agents, and the investigation remains open. The consulate in Chicago is closely monitoring the case.
