French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Wednesday that any attempt by Israel to annex parts of the West Bank would be a “red line” for the United States, signaling the end of Arab-Israeli diplomatic normalization. Macron, who recently met with former President Donald Trump, disclosed that Trump assured him of this stance. He presented a three-page plan for Palestine aimed at excluding Hamas from governance in Gaza and the West Bank and emphasized the need for coordination among the U.S., Europe, and Arab states.

As tensions rise over Israeli settlement expansion, particularly in the E1 corridor, Macron remarked that Europe and the U.S. share a unified position on the matter. He cautioned that annexation would jeopardize the Abraham Accords, a key diplomatic achievement following their signing in 2020.

Macron has urged Trump to leverage the U.S. influence to press Israel for progress toward a ceasefire, emphasizing the critical role America plays in the peace process. He criticized the current Israeli strategy as ineffective, claiming it has failed to diminish Hamas’s military capabilities.

If annexation proceeds with U.S. backing, it could severely damage the prospect of a two-state solution. Macron highlighted the necessity of providing Palestinians with a political pathway, warning that failure to address their aspirations might lead to increased violence. He articulated Europe’s willingness to consider sanctions if the conflict does not subside soon.
