Israel Strikes Gaza, Killing 85 Amid Global Calls for Ceasefire
At least 85 Palestinians were killed in Gaza on Wednesday, including a strike that killed 12 individuals, among them seven women and two children, at a makeshift shelter in the al-Ahli Stadium in Nuseirat refugee camp. This attack occurred amid ongoing Israeli military operations despite international calls for a ceasefire at the UN General Assembly.
The intensity of Israel’s assault has escalated, with claims from military officials that Palestinians are being pushed south for safety, a statement disputed by UN investigators who argue that the military actions are aimed at exerting control over Gaza and ensuring a Jewish majority in the West Bank.
World leaders at the UN condemned the violence. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for accountability for those committing violence against civilians, while Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa urged an immediate cessation of hostilities. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide indicated that discussions are ongoing to end the conflict, building on a previously endorsed roadmap.
The U.S. special envoy expressed optimism about potential breakthroughs, but past peace efforts have been undermined by Israeli leadership, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has faced protests and rejected international demands for a Palestinian state. Since the war’s onset on October 7, over 65,000 Palestinians have reportedly died, with many others injured or missing.
