Responding to criticisms that he is neglecting Manchester, Burnham stated he is dedicated to tackling local issues and is actively engaging with constituents. He expressed his strong affection for his role and commitment to Greater Manchester, asserting, “I’m completely committed to it.”

Burnham acknowledged the dynamics within the Labour Party, suggesting that while he is attentive to events in Westminster, it ultimately falls to the MPs to determine leadership matters. He mentioned his ongoing efforts to support critical legislation, such as the Hillsborough law.

In the backdrop, Steve Reed, the Housing Secretary, reminded Burnham to focus on his responsibilities as mayor while acknowledging his work. Reed’s comments seemed to suggest that Burnham’s ambitions regarding leadership discussions should remain secondary to his current role.

Burnham also proposed policy ideas, including council tax reform to ensure higher-value properties contribute fairly. Such discussions come as Labour prepares for its upcoming party conference, positioning itself to address pressing urban and social issues.
