Sinclair and Nexstar Lift Boycott, Will Resume Airing Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group announced that their ABC-affiliate stations will resume airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Friday, reversing a prior preemption that affected approximately 25% of viewers nationwide. This decision follows ABC’s reinstatement of the show after a nearly week-long hiatus amid controversy surrounding Kimmel’s comments on social issues.

Sinclair, which operates over 185 stations, and Nexstar, with approximately 200, are the largest local TV station owners in the U.S. In a statement, Sinclair noted they had received “thoughtful feedback” from various stakeholders while emphasizing their commitment to programming that resonates with diverse audiences. The company also proposed establishing an independent ombudsman to enhance accountability and viewer engagement, though ABC and Disney have not accepted these proposals.

The controversy escalated when FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened regulatory repercussions regarding Kimmel’s remarks, prompting the preemption. Following the decision to resume airing the show, Nexstar indicated ongoing discussions with Disney focused on aligning the program with community interests.

Despite the decision to bring Kimmel back, Sinclair asserted that its prior preemption was not influenced by government pressure, maintaining that broadcasters have the right to choose their content. The announcement has drawn reactions from various political figures, including Donald Trump, who previously commended ABC for the initial decision to suspend the show.
