Turkiye Athletes Urge FIFA and UEFA to Ban Israel’s Football Team

Pressure is mounting on football’s governing bodies to take action against Israel’s national team amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Türkiye has become the first member of UEFA to publicly call for Israel’s suspension from all competitions. Turkish Football Federation President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu urged FIFA and UEFA to act, criticizing their silence despite claiming to uphold civic values and peace.

UEFA is reportedly moving towards a vote on Israel’s suspension, with a likelihood of securing a majority if the matter is presented to its 20-member ruling committee. Concerns have been raised over the perceived double standard in treatment of Israel compared to Russia, which was banned from UEFA and FIFA competitions following its invasion of Ukraine.

Additionally, a coalition of 48 professional athletes, including French midfielder Paul Pogba and English cricketer Moeen Ali, has called on UEFA to suspend Israel until it complies with international law regarding the ongoing conflict. They referenced the death of Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid, emphasizing the need for justice and humanity in sports.

Although Israel has been a full UEFA member since 1994, it qualified for only one men’s World Cup in 1970. The U.S. Department of State has stated it will oppose any efforts to ban Israel from the upcoming World Cup, complicating the situation further. FIFA President Gianni Infantino, with close ties to U.S. leadership, is not expected to support a suspension.
