Impact of Israel-Gaza Conflict: Acute Suffering for Autistic Children
Abeer Hassan, a mother from Deir el-Balah, faces significant challenges caring for her autistic son, Abdallah, amid ongoing Israeli bombardments and forced displacements in Gaza. The incessant explosions have terrified Abdallah, causing him distress as they and other families flee their homes. Hassan recounted their attempt to find safety at a displaced camp called Ameera, only to find it full. They were directed to an area near Salah al-Din Street, despite the dangers involved.
The ongoing conflict has made survival especially difficult for children with special needs. Since the onset of hostilities in October 2023, Israeli forces have issued multiple evacuation orders, moving civilians toward designated “safe zones,” which are not immune to attacks. Abdallah has developed anxiety-related habits, including pulling his hair, prompting his family to keep it cut short to prevent damage. Hassan has even resorted to giving him sleeping pills to manage his distress during the heat.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, with reports indicating that nearly 66,005 people have been killed and 168,162 wounded since the beginning of the conflict. With limited resources and support, Hassan expressed her desperation, pleading for divine intervention as her family struggles to cope with the unbearable situation.
