Greta Thunberg Refutes Claims That Gaza Flotilla Is a Publicity Stunt
Greta Thunberg has refuted claims that her participation in the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is merely a publicity stunt. The Swedish activist is aboard one of 52 boats aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians. Israeli authorities have dismissed the flotilla, with accusations that it serves as a “selfie yacht” for attention-seeking purposes.
Speaking off the coast of Greece, Thunberg emphasized that the flotilla, which seeks to break Israel’s blockade, is both a humanitarian mission and a message of solidarity for Gaza’s residents. She highlighted the urgent need for aid as Israel continues to restrict supplies, citing UN reports of famine conditions exacerbated by these obstacles. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied these claims.
In recent weeks, the flotilla has faced hostility, including drone attacks targeting the boats near Tunis and off Crete, prompting Spain and Italy to dispatch naval ships to assist. Thunberg condemned these actions as violations of international law and emphasized the peaceful nature of the flotilla’s mission.
Previously, Thunberg and 11 activists were detained by Israeli officials in June when they tried to intercept a vessel carrying aid. She described their detention as illegal, while Israel maintained that it was enforcing its maritime blockade.
