Army Deployed to Etosha National Park for Security Operations

Namibia is deploying helicopters and hundreds of soldiers to combat a significant wildfire that has affected one-third of Etosha National Park, a prominent tourist destination in southern Africa. Renowned for its expansive salt pan visible from space, Etosha Park also serves as a habitat for critically endangered black rhinos.

The fire is believed to have originated from a charcoal production site outside the park’s boundaries on Monday. As of now, nearly a week later, the blaze has spread into the park, resulting in the death of at least nine antelope and the destruction of vital wildlife habitats, alongside grazing pastures in the Omusati and Oshana regions near the Angolan border. The Namibian environment ministry is now working to contain the situation amid growing concerns for the wildlife and ecosystem of the area.
