The Vatican has provided a health update on Pope Francis, who is currently receiving medical care at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. The latest information indicates that while his prognosis remains “complex,” the pope is no longer in “imminent danger” of death.

On Friday, the Holy See Press Office reported that Pope Francis’ condition is now deemed stable. Consequently, barring any significant changes, updates on his health will be less frequent. The 88-year-old pontiff has been hospitalized for four weeks due to double pneumonia.

Medical bulletins, previously issued almost daily, will now be released only when there is new information, according to the press office. They emphasized that while Francis’ recovery is progressing, it requires time to ensure ongoing improvements.

As part of this change, the Holy See has also announced that the daily morning updates detailing how the pope spent the night will no longer be shared, leaving only the evening briefings for the media.

This shift is viewed as “a positive sign” for the Catholic community, suggesting that no news is often good news.

Pope Francis continues to follow his prescribed medical treatments, which included motor physiotherapy on Friday. He is alternating between noninvasive mechanical ventilation at night and high-flow oxygenation with nasal cannulas during the day.

The pope has had a history of lung issues, having undergone part of a lung removal as a young man after a pulmonary infection, and has experienced recurring bouts of bronchitis in recent years.

In a recent statement, the press office recalled that Pope Francis celebrated the 12th anniversary of his papal election while surrounded by healthcare staff.

Notably, his hospital stay coincides with the Christian season of Lent, which began on March 5. This 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving culminates on Holy Thursday.
