Italy Condemns Attack on Gaza Aid Flotilla, Deploys Frigate for Security
Italy’s Defense Minister, Guido Crosetto, condemned an overnight drone attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which was attempting to breach Israel’s naval blockade to deliver aid to Gaza. He announced that an Italian Navy frigate would assist Italian citizens aboard the 52 boats currently near Crete. The GSF reported explosions, drone activity, and communications jamming, accusing Israel of escalating tensions. The Israeli government has not yet commented but has previously stated it will prevent the flotilla from reaching Gaza.
Footage released by the GSF showed explosions near its vessels, prompting requests for help from the Greek coastguard. A Portuguese vessel from Frontex was dispatched but found no damage to the boats. Prominent activist Greta Thunberg, participating in the flotilla, characterized the incident as a “scare tactic.”
The Israeli foreign ministry has alleged the flotilla is organized by Hamas and warned against breaching the blockade. The GSF aims to end what it describes as an illegal siege on Gaza. Recent reports indicate severe famine conditions in Gaza, leading to calls for unhindered humanitarian aid from the UN. Israel disputes the severity of the situation and maintains its actions comply with international law. Since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, over 65,000 Palestinians have reportedly died in the ongoing conflict.
