Labour MPs and prominent climate leaders are urging Keir Starmer to attend the upcoming Cop30 climate summit in Brazil this November. This call comes after advisers recommended against his attendance due to concerns about potential backlash from the Reform party. UN climate chief Simon Stiell emphasized that Cop30 is crucial for world leaders to negotiate agreements that will accelerate economic transitions and job creation related to climate action.

Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that attendance at the summit is a litmus test for leadership, urging leaders to solidify national climate commitments amidst global scrutiny. Other influential figures, including former Irish president Mary Robinson, expressed the importance of in-person attendance by heads of state to demonstrate commitment to climate action.

Despite the UK’s strong track record on climate leadership, some of Starmer’s aides fear criticism from the Reform party, which denies climate science. Public opinion polls indicate significant support for climate initiatives among the UK populace. Concerns have also been raised regarding whether King Charles will attend, as his participation would be awkward if the prime minister opts out.

Notably absent will be U.S. President Donald Trump, who has previously dismissed climate concerns. Leaders from various economic groups and vulnerable nations are expected to gather at the summit, where critical discussions on limiting global temperature rise will take place.
