Oklahoma Official Announces Turning Point Chapters in All High Schools Following Charlie Kirk’s Death
The Oklahoma State Superintendent, Ryan Walters, announced plans to establish Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapters in every high school in Oklahoma, aiming to counter what he termed “radical leftist teachers’ unions” and “woke indoctrination.” This initiative follows a surge in requests to start TPUSA chapters after the recent death of far-right activist Charlie Kirk. In a press release, Walters outlined the process for students to form a chapter called “Club America,” which includes gathering at least three students, securing a teacher sponsor, and receiving materials from TPUSA.
Walters emphasized the importance of engaging students in discussions about American values, criticizing what he described as liberal propaganda in classrooms. He indicated potential repercussions for schools that refuse to adopt these clubs, suggesting threats to their accreditation. While some educators support student-led initiatives, concerns were raised about enforcing club creation.
The announcement comes amid other controversial actions by Walters, including promoting religious and rightwing politics in schools and previous investigations into teachers who made negative comments about Kirk. Despite facing criticism, Walters remains focused on incentivizing conservative activism within the state’s educational system, describing it as a necessary countermeasure to existing liberal influences. Oklahoma ranks low in public education quality, currently positioned at 50th in a recent survey.
