One Month into Dezi Freeman Manhunt: How Long Will Police Search Following Porepunkah Shooting?

The search for fugitive Dezi Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby, has entered its second month following his alleged shooting of two police officers on August 26 during a search warrant execution in Porepunkah, Victoria. Approximately 450 officers have been combing the area, including 125 specialist officers who conducted the largest tactical operation in Australian history at the beginning of September, yet Freeman remains at large.

Criminologist Vince Hurley suggested the search could continue for another two months, emphasizing the need for thoroughness in covering all possible leads. Retired Victoria Police detective senior sergeant Charlie Bezzina noted that the escalating costs of the operation could reach millions, prompting police management to eventually reassess the search’s viability.

Various theories surrounding Freeman’s disappearance include the possibilities of his assistance from the public or survival alone in the wilderness. The Victoria Police have issued a $1 million reward for information leading to Freeman’s capture, marking the largest reward for an arrest in the state’s history. Local businesses, adversely affected by the search, have appealed for visitor return as they seek recovery from financial losses, with grants available for those impacted. Meanwhile, travel restrictions remain in place around Mount Buffalo National Park.
