Over $4 Million in Illegal Drugs Seized in Major Operation Across Western Australia’s Far North
Significant Drug Seizure in Western Australia
Authorities in Western Australia have made a substantial impact on local drug trafficking, with police seizing millions of dollars in illegal drugs and apprehending two suspected traffickers.
Targeting the Kimberley Region
This ongoing operation, encompassing officers from Broome, Kununurra, and Derby, has focused on disrupting the drug trade affecting the Kimberley region, which is facing dire consequences from these activities.
Seizures and Arrests
According to a WA Police spokesperson, nearly 4 kilograms of methylamphetamine, along with ammunition and other illicit substances, have been seized since April, with an estimated street value exceeding $4 million.
The arrests involve a 49-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, both from southern WA, charged with possessing a significant quantity of methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply. They are accused of orchestrating the smuggling of drugs into Perth.
Details of the Operation
The drugs were allegedly collected from a Perth hotel and transported approximately 3,000 kilometers north to Kununurra, eventually hidden within the walls of a residence in the nearby community of Mud Springs.
In a follow-up search in July, police seized an additional 2.8 kg of methylamphetamine from a storage unit in Broome, building on earlier seizures of 27 grams in April and more than 600 grams the same month.
Community Impact and Support
Superintendent John Hutchison stated that the operation has had a noticeably positive effect on the community, emphasizing, “The quantity of drugs would have had a devastating impact if they had reached our community.” He called on locals to report any suspicious activities, highlighting the crucial role of community involvement in combating drug-related issues.
Next Steps for the Accused
The two individuals charged are set to appear in the Broome Magistrates Court next month. Superintendent Hutchison cautioned that those involved in the illicit drug trade exploit the community for profit, disregarding the harm they cause.
Conclusion
This operation marks a critical step in addressing drug trafficking in Western Australia. With community support and continued law enforcement efforts, there is hope for reducing drug-related impacts in affected regions.
