Polish PM Warns of Russia’s Global Threat Amid EU and Ukraine Talks on ‘Drone Wall’

European Union countries, alongside Ukraine, are engaged in urgent discussions regarding a proposed “drone wall” aimed at countering escalating threats from Russia. This initiative follows recent unauthorized drone incursions into Lithuania, Poland, and Romania, as well as unexplained drone sightings over Denmark. Key participants in the talks include Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine, with EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius leading the discussions, supported by NATO at a technical level.

The talks focus on enhancing drone detection and interception capabilities to address the effectiveness of current systems. Kubilius noted the need for immediate solutions, particularly for countries bordering Russia, while emphasizing that the EU cannot afford delays. Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen highlighted the necessity for solidarity among EU nations, suggesting northern European countries should receive support from their southern and western counterparts.

However, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed the country would not invoke NATO’s Article 4 concerning the recent drone incidents. Discussions are set to continue with designated negotiators shortly to establish a concrete action plan. The goal is to develop a detailed roadmap to improve drone defense capabilities, learning from Ukraine’s experiences in the ongoing conflict.
