Russia’s Foreign Minister: No Plans to Attack EU or NATO Countries

During a speech at the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asserted that Russia has no plans to attack EU or NATO member states, though he warned a “decisive response” would follow any aggression towards Russia. He noted that threats from Western countries were becoming increasingly frequent.

Lavrov also condemned the recent attacks by Hamas on Israel but criticized the violent response inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza and plans to annex the West Bank, stating such actions could destabilize the region. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, Israeli airstrikes have resulted in over 65,900 fatalities.

On the issue of Iran, Lavrov accused Western powers of undermining diplomatic efforts after a bid by Russia and China to delay sanctions on Iran was unsuccessful. The foreign minister deemed the impending sanctions “illegal.”

Addressing geopolitical tensions, Lavrov stated that accusations against Russia of plotting attacks on NATO were unfounded, reiterating President Putin’s denial of such intentions. He asserted Moscow would respond firmly to any aggression. Additionally, he criticizedthe timing of certain countries, including the UK and France, recognizing a Palestinian state, suggesting they delayed action in hopes that minimal conditions would remain.

Lavrov also commented on recent tensions in Europe related to alleged Russian military incursions, including drone activities over Danish airspace and accusations of violating Estonian airspace. Amidst these developments, NATO has reiterated its commitment to using all necessary tools to defend itself.
