Sinclair and Nexstar to Bring Back Kimmel on ABC Stations

“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will resume airing on all ABC channels following a week-long ban initiated by the Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group. The companies decided to restore the late-night show after receiving feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders regarding controversial remarks made by Kimmel about the death of Charlie Kirk during a September 15 monologue.

Kimmel faced temporary suspension from ABC, but returned to the network on Tuesday, expressing regret for his remarks, which were interpreted as making light of Kirk’s murder. He criticized the political responses to the incident, describing them as “mob” censorship tactics and asserting that such reactions are “un-American” and “dangerous.”

The controversy escalated when Brendan Carr, Chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), threatened to revoke ABC’s broadcast license over Kimmel’s comments, prompting Sinclair and Nexstar to halt the show’s airing. This action sparked nationwide debates on free speech, with some viewers canceling their Disney+ subscriptions.

With Kimmel’s return drawing 6.26 million viewers despite the blackout, Trump expressed disappointment on social media, questioning Kimmel’s reinstatement. Sinclair stated that discussions with ABC and Disney are ongoing.
