Trump Claims ‘Triple Sabotage’ Following Escalator Malfunctions at UN Event

Donald Trump claimed “triple sabotage” occurred during his visit to the United Nations, implicating a series of unfortunate incidents that marred his address. In a post on Truth Social, he detailed his experience starting with an escalator malfunction that nearly caused him and First Lady Melania Trump to fall. He described the incident as “sinister” and demanded an investigation.

Trump also reported that his teleprompter failed mid-speech, noting, “What kind of a place is this?” He recounted Melania’s comment that she couldn’t hear his address, reinforcing his belief that these mishaps were part of a broader conspiracy he termed “escalatorgate.” Following the incidents, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that a videographer inadvertently triggered the escalator’s safety function.

Despite the technical difficulties, Trump’s combative speech criticized the UN and European allies over migration issues. His comments after the fact highlighted his frustration, claiming the UN only provided him with “a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter.” Later, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested that the escalator issue could have been intentional, asserting there should be accountability if it was a deliberate act. Trump pointed to media reports of UN staff joking about turning off the escalators as further evidence of a conspiracy.
