Ukraine and Syria Reestablish Diplomatic Relations After Assad Regime Breakdown | United Nations News
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to formally restore diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Syria. This development follows a severance of ties in 2022 when Syria recognized the independence of Russian-backed regions in eastern Ukraine, leading to Ukraine’s diplomatic break with Damascus.
Zelenskyy announced the signing of a Joint Communiqué, emphasizing support for the Syrian people and a commitment to mutual respect and cooperation. He noted discussions on potential areas for collaboration and shared security threats.
Al-Sharaa, who arrived in New York to represent Syria’s first presidential-level participation in the UNGA in nearly 60 years, addressed the assembly earlier, advocating for the lifting of international sanctions on Syria. He outlined recent reforms, including the establishment of new institutions, plans for elections, and initiatives to attract foreign investment following his assumption of power in January after a successful opposition-led effort against the Assad regime.
This meeting marks a significant diplomatic shift for both nations, aiming to build relations and address regional challenges collaboratively.
